Crime statistics (Asheville + Buncombe County)

I know periodically APD will release crime statistics for a period of time. I am requesting crime rate and statistics from 1/2014 thru 2/25/2018 for Buncombe County. I am making the request for both the city of Asheville and Buncombe County.

BUNCOMBE County and City of Asheville Crime rates and statistics maintained.

    Good Morning,

Thank you for your patience. I will be sending the information you requested in several emails; my first attempt resulted in a bounce-back message from the file size being too large. Attached in the following emails you will find an in-house document created by compiling information we submit to the NC SBI on a monthly basis, which is then compiled into an annual report by the SBI for years 2007-2016. For calendar year 2017 and the first two months of 2018, you will find the actual monthly reports the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office submitted to the SBI.

    Best regards,

    Natalie

I’ll give you a basic summary on the functionality of the crime map.

There are four options to view the data. Map, Data Grid, Analytics, and Meta Data.

The map view lets you look at data via map as you have seen.

Data grid brings up a spreadsheet like format that has information on any specific crime.

Analytics might be where your requester will be most interested. It offers different charting options and allows you to view aggregate crime stats.

Meta Data just has basic information about who is providing the data, basically the City of Asheville Police Department.

You can make changes to the data on the left, such as date, type of crime, and mile radius in the city.

If you have any more questions about it feel free to ask.

    Hi Ben,

Thank you for the info. We will certainly include that in the request update on our site.

I do think though that this request is for the aggregate crime stats by category. Say, for each year, Jan 01. 2014 – Feb. 25, 2018. We took a look at the community crime map tool, and aren’t clear whether there’s a way to generate that type of information.

Looking at the crime data feed, that does seem to have what we need, but we would have to aggregate and process the data ourselves. Is there a piece of functionality we’re missing that would allow us to generate the type of statistics described above, using the open data website? Since this doesn’t seem to be possible, would it be a problem for APD to just generate those stats for us?

    Thank you for your time.
    Have a great evening!

I’ve just been told that the Crime Map has data going back to 2012. This crime map is updated in real time from the APD crime database. The requester should be able to find everything they need from there. Here is the link one more time, www.communitycrimemap.com.
