Pisgah High School

Hello Sunshine Request!

I have been curious about the amount of money spent catering to the high school football fanaticism at Pisgah High School for a number of years. I would like to know the following:

1) How much of the school’s athletic budget is devoted to football, and what are the amounts,

2) Does HaywoodCounty or the Town of Canton provide any sort of in-kind government support (police, fire and EMS, etc) and what are the amounts?

I’d like this information for the past ten years, and broken down by year.

Thank you very much for your time!

Editor’s Note: Sunshine Request makes no claim as to the veracity of any statements or information contained in any of the requests, or public records, we receive.

    Good Afternoon Pat,

    Thank you for your reply!

Yes, you’re correct that you’ve also sent that information to us via the email thread for the Pisgah High request. However, we have not received any response to our two recent follow ups we sent you in response to your message.

    For reference –

    Pisgah: https://www.sunshinerequest.com/records_request/pisgah-high-school/

    Tuscola: https://www.sunshinerequest.com/records_request/tuscola-high-school/

    We’ll restate our question here:

    “ RE: Providing a name –

Our understanding is that NC Public Records Law does not require that an individual must provide any identifying information when making a records request. If you can please cite the portion of NC State Law or School Policy that requires this information, this would be helpful for our records. Please let us know if you’re willing to fulfill the requests, as provided.

Regarding whether we can provide additional info. or clarification related to the details of the request – We pass along the requests, as written by the requesters, and add the completed requests to our site. We do not have any additional information to provide at this time, other than what was sent in. However, if the sender does wish to clarify any portions of the request, they are welcome to do at any time so by resubmitting a new form through our website, and providing those details.”

Thank you for your assistance with the requests.

    Have a great afternoon!

Dear Sunshine Request, your request has been forwarded to me for response. Please see my previous response to a previous request in which I ask that the requestor please identify themselves for administrative purposes. The public records law states that a “person” (which has also been interpreted to include a legal entity such as corporation) is included in that definition. As present, I do not think a website, or application would fit that designation. If you have other information to the contrary please advise. We will be pleased to respond to this “person’s” request upon identification, or upon further documentation that a computer application is a “person” as defined by the statute. Please consider this a further response the requestor(s) regarding athletic support at both Tuscola and Pisgah High School. Thank you. Pat Smathers.

    To Whom It May Concern:

Please be advised I am responding as attorney for the Haywood County School System. Your request regarding Tuscola and Pisgah High Schools has been forwarded to me for response. The School System is very willing to respond, but for administrative purposes, this is to request that the person or legal entity requesting please identify themselves. This will assist in determining if the request is valid and prevent responding multiple times. Second, pursuant to applicable North Carolina public records law, we assume you are requesting the athletic budgets for Pisgah and Tuscola High Schools from which the requestor may themselves determine the amount spent. We do not have documents showing sums paid by Haywood County, Town of Waynesville, Town of Canton, or athletic booster clubs in support of the identified programs. The School System is attempting to determine if records still exist back 10 years.

Please advise as soon as possible so we may promptly respond.

    Sincerely,
    Patrick U. Smathers

It is my understanding that Dr. Nolte has already sent you a similar email requesting public records. This third party has made a similar request to Pisgah as well. Would you mind taking a look at this one too?

    Thanks in advance,

    Good Afternoon Pisgah High School,

I work for a website called Sunshine Request www.sunshinerequest.com. We built a site that makes it easier to make public records requests by filling out a simple form, and the results of any requests are posted on our site. This allows citizens to learn more about our local government, while saving staff from having to fulfill duplicate requests. If you have any questions about the project, please let me know, and I’ll be happy to answer.

The second part of the below request was seprately sent into Haywood County and they have already replied and stated: “The County may supply an ambulance or deputies to the ball games, but the schools usually pay for these. The school system would have the information for this.”

Here are the original details sent by the requester:

    Subject: Pisgah High school

    Message:

    “Hello Sunshine Request!
