[Completed / No Reply] WLOS ABC 13 – Stony Gonce article

In the early evening of Friday March 02, 2018, WLOS ABC News 13 reporter Aaron Edelson published 2 posts on his public Facebook page related to APD's Captain Stony Gonce. One of the posts read, "Friday Asheville Police placed its Criminal Investigations Division Commander, Captain Stony Gonce, on "Paid investigative suspension."

A couple hours later, WLOS ABC News 13 published a brief statement on their website, along with an accompanying descriptive headline on their Facebook page reading, "Asheville police representatives confirm Captain Stony Gonce is on paid investigative suspension."

Sources:
http://wlos.com/news/local/asheville-police-captain-on-paid-investigative-suspension
https://www.facebook.com/News13/posts/10155557603986799

In their original article, WLOS wrote that this information was confirmed by "Asheville Police representatives". Since its original posting, the article has been amended to include the fact that the APD representative who confirmed the info. was Officer Christina Hallingse. It also says that "No other details were given. News 13 will follow up with police on Monday."

I'd like to know where this information sent to WLOS originated. Specifically, did APD reach out to WLOS directly to provide them with the information announcing that Captain Gonce was on leave? Or, did WLOS receive information from an outside (non-APD) source stating that Mr. Gonce was on leave, and they contacted APD to confirm whether the info. was accurate?

    Good Morning Aaaron,

I work for a website called Sunshine Request www.sunshinerequest.com. We built a site that makes it easier to make public records requests by filling out a simple form, and the results of any requests are posted on our site. This allows citizens to learn more about our local government, while saving staff from having to fulfill duplicate requests. If you have any questions about the project, please let me know, and I’ll be happy to answer.

We recently received a request for info. that is related to your Facebook post about Stony Gonce’s leave from APD. In the process of trying to fulfill the request, we learned this morning from Christina Hallingse at APD that the information they were asked to confirm originated with WLOS.

If you are willing or able to clarify who contacted you with this original information about Stony Gonce we would greatly appreciate it. Alternatively, if you are unable to give a name, we would appreciate confirmation whether this information was given to you by a private citizen, APD representative, or approved APD spokesperson.

You can read the full details of the request and all government responses at http://www.sunshinerequest.com/records_request/wlos-abc-13-stony-gonce-article/

Thank you very much for your time.
    Have a great afternoon!

    Good afternoon,

On Friday afternoon (March 2nd) I was contacted by Aaron Adelson at WLOS. His email stated, “We are hearing there has been a change in Captain Gonce’s employment. Is he still employed by APD? Is he on administrative leave?”.

After consulting with both HR and the City Manager’s Office I confirmed that as of March 2, 2018 Captain Stony Gonce had been placed on paid investigative suspension, information which is reflected on the public copy of his personnel file.

    Thank you,
    Christina

    Good Afternoon Officer Hallingse,

I work for a website called Sunshine Request www.sunshinerequest.com here in Asheville.

We built a site that makes it easier to make public records requests by filling out a simple form, and the results of any requests are posted on our site. This allows citizens to learn more about our local government and community, while saving staff from having to fulfill duplicate requests. If you have any questions about the project, please let me know, I’ll be happy to answer.

We just recently received and sent off a request that I’ve just learned may be available in your office. Ben Fulmer with City of AVL records advises that I should reach out to you about this request, as it seems to be more of a request for information.

    Hello Sunshine,

This is not a request for records but for information. If people are interested in information about the APD that does not exist on a record, then I would suggest contacting the APD’s Public Information Officer Christina Hallingse at [email protected].

Were also in receipt of your requests from last week and today.

    Thanks,

    Ben Fulmer
