(August 2019) Public records request for Jackson County, NC Sheriff Dept. drug arrests
Hello Jackson County, NC Sheriff’s Office,
I’d like to make a request to obtain information related to illicit drug use in Jackson County, NC. Specifically, I’d like to know all arrests related to illegal drug possession, distribution, paraphernalia etc.
1. I would like to request a list of all drug related arrests in Jackson County, NC for the calendar years 2014 through (and including) 2018. Please include the arrest dates in the data.
2. Additionally, I’d like to request the same data for the first 6 months of 2019.

Apologies for any confusion – we cannot publish this document on our site. As stated in our previous editor’s notes we sent in with the request:
“Sunshine Request does not fulfill requests for police reports, calls for service, or criminal / arrest type records for a single individual, incident, or address. We will not publish individual names and addresses which may be personally identifiable related to arrests, our site. Therefore, if you could please just provide the case #s for the arrests requested, that would be fine. Thank you!”
With that in mind, we’d like to ask that you please remove the personally identifiable columns of information (all names and birthdays) and please add in the case numbers as requested.

Thank you for getting back to us! For larger files like what you’re describing, we recommend uploading to a public Google Drive folder or Dropbox and then sending us a link. You could also try compressing the files and zipping them to reduce the size! If all else fails, you could mail us a jump drive that has the requested information, however the options I have listed out previously should do the trick.

I’d like to make a public records request for arrest records for all illicit drug activity, January01, 2014 to present (when this query is performed).
This request was previously made anonymously via www.sunshinerequest.com, and the result indicated that a subpoena would be necessary.
However, some NC counties have similar information available and searchable (i.e. Henderson County). Also, this information is published in local papers on a weekly basis. It would seem logical the JC Sheriff’s Department would also have these records.
Based on what other jurisdictions are making available, the need for subpoena does not appear accurate nor consistent with public records requests. Therefore, I’d like to request that the previous request (found at is re-submitted and ‘Reopened.’

**09/19/19 Editor’s Note: Today we called and spoke with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department to determine who would be the best contact to get this request fulfilled. We were told that the type of information requested here can only be obtained through a subpoena via mail.
At this point we will mark this request as “Completed” on our site.
We recommend that the sender mail in their request to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department at 399 Grindstaff Cove Rd, Sylva, NC 28779.
