Buncombe Sheriffs Expenditures

Recently, Sheriff Miller spoke to commissioners about budget issues and the need for equipment, especially patrol vehicles, which are old and have high mileage.

We would like to know what the total outfitted cost was of Sheriff Miller’s new SUV that he is driving as well as the cost to change the uniforms of all the court security personnel.

Why did the Sheriff require a brand new vehicle rather than the patrol deputies answering emergency calls?

We would also like to know the salary for the new Detective Sergeant at the Family Justice Center and if that salary is different from others in the same position.

    Hello Sunshine Request,

    The original question was:

“Recently, Sheriff Miller spoke to commissioners about budget issues and the need for equipment, especially patrol vehicles, which are old and have high mileage.

We would like to know what the total outfitted cost was of Sheriff Miller’s new SUV that he is driving as well as the cost to change the uniforms of all the court security personnel.

Why did the Sheriff require a brand new vehicle rather than the patrol deputies answering emergency calls?

We would also like to know the salary for the new Detective Sergeant at the Family Justice Center and if that salary is different from others in the same position.”

Sheriff Miller drives a 2019 Chevy Tahoe, the cost of the vehicle is $37,279.00. The “total outfitted cost” which includes all the standard equipment – police lights, patrol radio, tags, etc. is $48,852.67.

The uniform changes apply to 23 members of our Court Security team. The cost of the uniform update was $265 per officer for a total cost of $6,095 to the Sheriff’s Office. That cost includes five shirts per officer.

Yes, Sheriff Miller has asked for new patrol vehicles in his FY20 budget because as you stated, many patrol vehicles have high mileage on them. The proposed FY20 county budget put forth by the county manager includes funding for 40 new vehicles and Sheriff Miller is very happy about that. The Sheriff also requires a vehicle and the county allows the Sheriff to choose a vehicle from the county fleet as part of his employment, as has been the case with past Sheriffs. So the answer is that the Sheriff requires a vehicle as part of his job (he frequently drives to surrounding counties and across the state for meetings in his role as Sheriff) and Patrol Deputies should also have vehicles that are safe to use.

The salary for the Detective Sergeant at the Family Justice Center is $57,262.40, there is only one Sergeant at the FJC.

You can learn more about the Sheriff’s salary and the budget of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office at www.buncombecounty.org/governing/depts/sheriff/default.aspx under the FAQ section.
