Good evening Sheriff, Michael, Jonathan, (or Records Officer / Custodian(s) of these records),
Please reply promptly to the following public records request, which I’m making in accordance with NC Public Records Law. https://www.ncleg.net/enactedlegislation/statutes/html/bychapter/chapter_132.html
Please provide the total number of calls received AND dispatched for the Macon County Sheriff's Office/911 Dispatch, during the time period of 01/01/2020 through 04/01/2024. Please also indicate the total number of calls received and dispatched by month to each entity (such as the Fire Dept, Police Dept, etc).
For Example:
January 2020. Total Calls: 100. Dispatched to Sheriff's Dept: 25. Dispatched to Fire Dept: 10
To be clear, I’m only requesting to know totals. Please DO NOT include any personally identifying information about callers, addresses, case #s, etc, if that type of data exists. It is not relevant to my request.
** I’m simply requesting an electronic copy of an electronic record, if one exists. I’m NOT asking for the opportunity to come in person to "inspect", nor to obtain a printed copy of, this electronic record. I’m requesting explicitly that any responsive info be provided to me via the electronic medium / electronic format (in which the copy of this record already exists). If you are unable to fulfill any or all parts of this request, please specifically cite where a reason for denial is justified under NC Public Records Law. **

My apologies.
I realize now that I overlooked your initial email yesterday where you mentioned that your “… CAD program does not have a report that will provide the total number of calls by month by entity as you requested. However, the attached file will show every call the Macon County 911 Communications Center has dispatched in the specified time period in chronological order.”
With this in mind — I will now consider my request to be “Completed”, and later today or early tomorrow I will mark it as “Completed” on our website.
I cannot publish the files you sent me, unfortunately, as it goes against the polices on my website. Therefore, anyone in the public who may wish to obtain that data in the future, is encouraged to reach out to your office directly for further assistance.

To clarify — in my initial request I asked:

I have only asked for total numbers, broken down by month. I specifically did not want to receive any personally identifying information about individual cases / incident #s / victims / addresses / or callers. I post the results of all records requests publicly on my website, and so that type of data is not something that I will request or post. It goes against my website’s policies. I will, on a case by case basis, fulfill public safety related requests that focus on system-level trends and data.
– File (Part 1) you sent contains 12,258 pages.
– File (Part 2) you sent contains 10,583 pages.Within those files, each page contains multiple reports specific Date/Time, Disposition, Event, Incident #, Unit Org(s), Event Location (address, and lat. and long.). Unless I were going to review all 22,841 pages (and even more individual incidents) to form my own calculations and pull out the info needed — I have not been provided with the totals as requested.
Can you please specify whether it is possible to produce the records as requested? And if not, please cite where this denial is justified under NC Public Records Law?

Our CAD program does not have a report that will provide the total number of calls by month by entity as you requested. The requested records are maintained by the Macon County 911 Dispatch Center, which is under the direction of the Macon County Emergency Management Department.
