Request for Bunc. Co. sexual assault evidence / rape kits lists info
All information in the form of emails and lists showing the Buncombe county sheriffs departments efforts in the state wide efforts to test rape kits.
At a minimum a list of all of the kits in possession of their department, the date the kit was taken in, and when it was sent to the laboratory for testing
Would also prefer reporting going back to the district attorneys request for inventory and explanations issued during the spring of 2017

As of 6/25/2019 here is the info on sexual assault kits in possession of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office. These seven categories are the ones utilized by the North Carolina Attorney General’s office for the statewide inventory system. (I assume this is what the question is referring to when it mentions “the district attorneys request for inventory”). All of our kits are barcoded and entered into our records management database.
Incoming kits outstanding to come from any Medical Facility = 0
Active Investigation Kits pending submission to testing = 12
Kits at lab being analyzed = 1
Kits completed at lab and returned to us = 2
Kits not meeting criteria for system input = 0
Old kits in inventory awaiting MDT and investigation = 201
Anonymous kits in the system at LESS = 7
The Sheriff’s Office is currently reviewing cases with the District Attorney’s office and Our Voice to prioritize the kits to be sent in for testing to the State Crime Lab. This group is the MultiDisciplinary Team (MDT) referenced above.

Anyone who has had a sexual assault kit collected in the jurisdiction of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office can call 828.250.6922 and speak to Detective Sergeant Angie Tullis, who heads up our team at the Family Justice Center.
If, for any reason, a survivor prefers not to contact law enforcement to receive an update on their kit, then they can reach out to Our Voice and receive updates by calling 828.255.7576.
